Chapter 9
It was late afternoon before Edwardâs car finally pulled up in front of Catâs cottage.
âLooks like you have company,â said Edward pointing to the strange car parked beside Catâs cottage. Bringing his car to a stop on the lane, he climbed out and opened the back door letting The OâBrien and Marian out.
âCan I run over and see Caitlin and Miss Maureen while weâre here?â pleaded Marian.
âSure,â replied Edward.
Quickly scanning the area, Cat called to Marian as she started across the lane, âWhy donât you take The OâBrien with you. Iâm sure heâd love a chance to stretch his legs after being cramped up in the back seat for so long.â
Cat quickly gave The OâBrien the hand signal which heâd been taught and he immediately left her side and ambled over to where Marian waited. Looking over at Edward solemnly, Cat remarked, âWith two murders so close to home, it might be a good idea not to let Marian go wandering off on her own for a while.â
Edward suddenly looked concerned but before he could call Marian back Cat put her hand on his arm and nodded in the direction of the giant of a dog standing close to the young girlâs side. âYou donât have to worry about her right now. She is with The OâBrien and he wonât leave her. Believe me, sheâll come to no harm with him beside her.â
As Marian and The OâBrien entered Maureenâs cottage, Jeff came bursting out the door with a face resembling a thunder storm. Before either Cat or Edward even had a chance to greet him he shouted, âWhere the Hell have you been? Garda Burke has been here looking for you and Iâve been worried sick.â
Seeing the anguished look of worry on his face, Cat wrapped her arms around her best friend saying, âIâm so sorry Jeff. I had no idea you were coming or I would have been here to greet you.â
Feeling contrite now, Jeff mumbled, âYou didnât know because I didnât tell you. I heard on the news at home about the murder on the boat and was more than a little irritated you didnât call me as soon as it happened. Then I started worrying about you. So I booked a flight and came over.â
Giving him another tight squeeze Cat replied, âIâm so sorry Jeff. I had no idea it would make the news in the States or I would have phoned you. Besides it doesnât have anything to do with me so Iâm not in any danger.â
Holding him at armâs length she smiled up into his worried eyes and said, âAnd youâve been drinking, havenât you?â
Looking down and nodding his head like a naughty child, whoâd been caught with his hand in the cookie jar, Jeff replied, âIf you think Iâm in bad shape, you should see Maureen.â
This time it was Edwardâs turn to react as he sprinted across the lane yelling back to them, âI hope Iâm not too late. I donât want Maureen to ask Marian about what happened today.
